Dr. Magdy Kamel ElHawary writes : Will the World Accept the Status Quo Between the United States and Iran?
In a world where events are accelerating and power balances are constantly shifting, the relationship between the United States and Iran remains one of the most dangerous and complex issues on the global stage. The conflict between the two sides is no longer just political or diplomatic; it has evolved into a prolonged state of tension, carrying the potential for sudden escalation at any moment.
The pressing question today is: Will the world accept this status quo? Or are we witnessing a transitional phase that may lead to a larger shift, potentially redrawing the map of influence in the Middle East?
What we are currently seeing can be described as a “fragile balance.” Neither side appears willing to slide into a full-scale war, yet at the same time, neither possesses the complete ability or desire to step back. The United States understands that any direct confrontation with Iran could ignite widespread instability in a region critical to the global economy, particularly due to its connection to energy routes and international trade. Meanwhile, Iran is aware that full escalation would come at a high cost, both domestically and internationally.
However, this balance does not equate to stability. It resembles a delayed explosion waiting to happen. Indirect confrontations—whether through allies or economic pressure and sanctions—continue and, at times, intensify.
From a global perspective, the situation appears to be treated as a reality that must be managed, especially as major powers are preoccupied with other economic and military crises around the world. Yet this apparent acceptance does not reflect genuine satisfaction, but rather a temporary adaptation to a complicated reality.
The real danger lies in the normalization of tension. If this situation persists, conflict may become part of the daily landscape, increasing the risk of miscalculations or unintended escalation.
In the end, the question remains open: Are we facing a chronic conflict that the world will live with for years to come? Or is a moment of major confrontation or comprehensive settlement closer than we think?
Only the coming days will provide the answer. What is certain, however, is that the world cannot afford to ignore this issue, as its consequences will not be confined to the region, but will extend to every household across the globe.
